Super excited to be writing our very first update article for Onyx!

First off, a massive thank you to everyone who supported us in making Onyx and for your comments! We are working towards launching Onyx as an MVP between July and August 2026, and are exhilarated for you to try it out!

Last month, we asked our friends and members of the community to give us feedback on how they perceived Onyx. We showed them the pre-released version of the landing page and asked for their feedback on Onyx content and, alongside it, the UI experience.

We received many comments, mostly positive; however, two of them are worth highlighting:

Comment 1: OT uses protocols, not encryption. How does it fit within the audience of Onyx?

In the target audience, we have specifically mentioned that we are concerned with critical infrastructures rather than the entire domain of OT. Even if many OT protocols are not encrypted, critical infrastructure still has cryptography that needs to be discovered, assessed, and migrated for post-quantum readiness. This includes crypto dependencies around OT and a defense-in-depth approach where legacy protocols can not be directly updated. As shown in the assessment feature (third point), we paint with a wider brush when talking about OT; we focus on Purdue-style OT environments, such as OT and IT boundaries, gateways, data historians, engineering workstations, HMI, and other systems where cryptography may exist around OT. While the comment makes sense, that many OT protocols lack encryption, that does not mean critical infrastructure has no cryptography to assess. Interestingly enough, that is why we have an awareness feature in Onyx, so people can understand OT and ICS systems more!

Comment 2: The landing page animation lags on my mobile phone!

The phone animation was heavy for some users using older mobile devices. Prior to the pre-release, we utilized UI performance testing tools and ran manual tests across multiple phones and browsers. We didn't experience major issues outside of a 2–3 second lag in the worst-case scenarios. As this was expected, we have underestimated how much people would use their phones rather than a laptop when looking at the observability of Onyx.

We noticed that most, if not all, looked up the waiting list on their mobile phone rather than a laptop. For the best Onyx experience, we recommend using a laptop or desktop, especially when we officially launch our website. Though understandably, waitlist joining is deemed as a pre-release, hence it is conveniently used on a mobile phone; nonetheless, on release, mobile access is supported for browsing and quick viewing, but larger screens provide the clearest experience.

Based on these comments, here's what we changed:

• We disabled the landing page animation on mobile and tablet devices only.
• Regarding comment #1 we got, we expanded our OT explanation and added it to the FAQ under the third answer.

We believe transparency is an important part of building Onyx. We will be continuing sharing our progress, the feedback we receive, and the improvements we make along the way.
